Electro-ejaculation for spinal injuries
ICSI has also brought a dramatic improvement in the chance of fatherhood for paraplegic men. Until now paralysis caused by spinal injuries - frequently in young men tragically hurt in road or industrial accidents - brought the added burden of ejaculatory failure and infertility.

But they can now often achieve fertility with the help of electro-ejaculation. Though used for many years, simple insemination of the collected sperm usually failed to achieve pregnancy. This is because the sperm obtained are often of poor motility due to complications associated with paralysis and confinement in a wheelchair.

Today IVF, particularly by ICSI, has greatly improved the chance of success. And too, there have been major advances in equipment to achieve electro-ejaculation reliably.

Here at our Centre we have the very latest equipment and all the skills necessary to offer paraplegic men a good chance of fathering children. Electro-ejaculation is, however, now being overtaken by increasingly simple methods of collecting sperm by a fine needle under local anaesthetic (as described earlier for men with blockages).
