Background

The Centre for Reproductive Medicine is part of the University of Bristol Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology standing at the forefront of advancing science and practice in the medical field of reproductive disorders. We have made major contributions to the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of various causes of ovulation failure and to recognising long-term health risks associated with such failure.

We began IVF in 1983 with research grants as NHS funds were not available for this service. We considered the provision of service, training and research so important that we created this independent Centre, funded by income from private clinical services. The Centre has grown in size and achievement. Senior members serve on professional bodies, contribute to scientific journals internationally and lecture around the world.

Our Centre is entirely private, although our services can be purchased by NHS Authorities. While our Centre aims to be profitable, its purpose is to support research and development in Reproductive Medicine within the University.

Above all, our first concern is for patients' personal and emotional needs. Research never interferes with treatment but keeps us constantly thinking critically.
