I am 32 years old. My brother is affected by Duchenne's Muscular Distrophy and so I know I am a carrier of this disease. It means if we have a son, he would be affected. I would have to wait until the 12th week of pregnancy to discover if he was affected or not & then I could terminate the pregnancy if I wanted to. If I were to have a daughter, she would be a carrier of the disease which means that she and her partner would have to face the same dilemmas as us if she wanted children. If I use donated eggs then we would not have to face these agonising decisions. We have thought hard about this and have waited 2 years for our first treatment. It was very traumatic as one of our donors cancelled so we had to stop at one point and wait for the next donor. We have now had our first cycle but sadly it didn't work. After the initial upset I feel quite philosophical about it all but we know that we have to wait another 2 years for our next chance.
