I am 43 years old. My husband and I started our family in our 30's and conceived our child easily. I was unaware that I was a carrier of a genetic problem. Our child was affected and he died at the age of three after a terrible illness. The chances of the same happening with another pregnancy and baby would be 1 in 4. This would just be too much of a risk for us. Egg donation was our option. It took a long time to come to terms with our experiences and decide to use donor eggs. Of course by then I was getting older and with the risk of a long waiting list meant our chances could be spoilt if I came to the top of the list after my 45th birthday. We helped the unit with some publicity to highlight the need for donor eggs. The advantage of donor eggs is the age factor of the donor who will be less than 35 years of age to help ensure good quality of eggs which helps the success rate. Obviously she will not be a carrier of the same condition as myself. We have now had treatment after a long wait and I am pregnant. I am so grateful to the woman who gave her eggs so that we have this chance to have a healthy child without the worry of the same thing happening again.
