I am 29 years old. I was 26 when I went through the menopause. We'd only been married for six months and it was a terrible shock. There's no history of early menopause in my family - in fact my mother, at 48 still hadn't gone through it when I did. We'd always wanted a family - we'd been going out together for 6 years and it was something we'd wanted to do very soon after getting married. I was lucky in one respect - they diagnosed what it was very quickly and I knew from that point on that the only hope for us was in finding an egg donor. However it became clear that that was going to be the difficult part. Estimates for the time it would take to come to the top of the waiting list ranged from 2 to 10 years, depending on the clinic we spoke too. One clinic even told us that there was no point in taking us on for treatment unless we could bring our own donor with us. When we were told that there was a donor available, I burst into tears. It is impossible to describe the happiness you feel at finally being given the chance to go for treatment. Knowing that someone who I don't know has gone through the process purely to give us the chance of a baby makes me feel incredibly humble. I can only say that all donors must be very special people. We might never know the name of our donor, but we will never forget her.
